To complete his journey, Tehaka needs to overcome greed but expresses reservations about it on the eve of his next incarnation.

Braithwaite outmanoeuvres his rivals and secures the caravan trade for the British government while amassing a fortune for himself. Adam joins Stanley’s expedition to find Livingstone, and Braithwaite meets Thandi, a Zulu, who becomes his wife and business partner.

A Shona trader and mystic from Great Zimbabwe tells Braithwaite that Adam will return with Livingstone and he will go on a pilgrimage to India.

Braithwaite attends a banquet in honour of the Prince of Wales in Bombay, where he hopes to have a title conferred on him, but discovers that his journey is a hoax. He goes on a pilgrimage to Sai Baba of Shirdi, but rejects the guru’s advice. When he returns to Zanzibar he finds his house wrecked and his trading rights revoked because his enemies discovered how he had deprived them of their livelihoods. He tries to make amends but it is too late...

Part 2 — Set in South Africa, Zimbabwe and India, circa 1995

Dr Luke Carlisle, an orthopaedic surgeon, is put under pressure by his wife, Linda, who is a compulsive spender. A friend presents Luke with a lucrative opportunity and when Linda becomes involved she opens a Pandora’s Box. Luke discovers that some of his colleagues are involved in corruption and he is forced to join them when his family is threatened. The climax comes when Luke carries out a revision operation and discovers that one of his colleagues purposely botches operations to earn more fees. When news of the scam is leaked to the press, Luke’s wife and children are killed in a car accident.

To recover from the drama and grief, Luke follows a spiritual path which takes him to Great Zimbabwe and India where he has mystical and spiritual experiences. On the advice of an Indian guru, Sai Baba of Puttaparthi, Luke returns to Johannesburg where he finds himself involved in a court case against his colleague.

A black female lawyer, Thandi Sikakana, represents him. They fall in love and together set about helping those less fortunate in Zululand. They marry and have a son, Adam Carlisle, and live peacefully until Luke’s death in the Valley of a Thousand Hills.

Part 3 - Set in New York, India and Zimbabwe, circa 2035.

Paul Bannister inherits his father’s financial empire, but he doesn’t want it. He comes under pressure to make some decisions about the future of his father’s company, but he wants to search for his mother who abandoned him when he was a baby.

To clear his mind, he travels to India where he meets the boy guru, Sai Baba of Gunaparthi and Adam Carlisle. Paul and Adam return to New York. Paul reluctantly takes on his father’s company and donates a large sum of money to Adam’s shelter for the homeless. Paul finds himself drawn to helping others and is catapulted into the limelight as an evangelist.

With the help of Carla Granelli, the mastermind of GNTV, Paul goes on TV shows and tours the country giving talks. Part of the proceeds from the shows goes to the homeless, and when Paul discovers that Granelli is blocking their funds, they are drawn together on opposing paths.

At the same time, Paul is told that his mother died a long time ago. He doesn’t believe it and hires a private detective to investigate. The detective discovers that Granelli and the President of the United States are involved in a cover up.

The climax comes when a rally is held in Central Park, and a sharp shooter tries to assassinate the private detective. He misses and hits Paul. As he lies dying, Granelli reveals that she is his mother.

Tehaka has conquered greed and asks to be allowed to help others.
